Trans*phobia and Homophobia

thehawkeyeinitiative:

I have had several people messaging me about the fact that The Hawkeye Initiative in many ways comes across as being trans* and homophobic. It never occurred to me that THI might be perceived as such, and I really appreciate those of you who have taken the time to point it out to me.

Please understand I am not ignoring this. It is not an issue to be taken lightly, nor something I want to rush into sloppily, so I am speaking with people on a one-on-one basis and getting ideas for how best to resolve this issue without closing the blog.

Thank you so much for your patience-
Archivist

I doubt it! You’ve hardly done anything to change the ways of your blog or actually attempt to remove the rapidly increasing homophobia and transphobia and anti-femme ways of your blog.

even in the change in moderation, they too have ignore the problem. Which makes you both the problem instagators. You are a terrible host and if you cannot make the blog safe to brows for LGBT and the like, then you should not host this blog.

The reason why the THI (the original not the blog) has gone down hill was because of this blog. It has turned something great into a trend. Thus people disfigure finally drawn and decently drawn women because they can’t see the difference because no one is showing them the actual different. They are making fun of artists who do a decent job, and making fun of actual decent costumes.

Not to mention the are shaming artists, and most of all accidentally labeling themselves as Trans*phobia and Homophobic and Anti-Femme.

Sure it was all fun and games, and the fact that you people too Blue’s and GingerHazes’ original images way out context. You took something that could have been great and ruined it.

You blog is still greatly Homophobic and Trans*phobic and very Anti-femme. And I can’t go through the pages of your blog and point all of this out to you because i start to gag on my own vomit for all the misandry and terrible redraws and not to mention the very obvious homophobia and trans*phobia.

I tried never drew him before sorry ,Here have some seventies Hawkeye he’s fabulous

don’t even get me started on the obvious and glaring homophobia and trans*phobia in this fucking image. there is no satire to be found. Just because he wears a skirtish dress (tribal inspired, native american inspired at that) in the seventies. the redraw’s artist thought it would be funny to give him overly juicy lips and long wavy hair (70s-80s hawkeye had a mullet for christ’s sake.)

just because he wore a dress doesn’t mean it is funny to laugh at.’Sexism’ should be able to open the punchline for trans*phobia and homophobia.

Probably the one of the many redraw artists that need to be lightly stoned with mushy gravel.

(didn’t see Fraction’s Hawkeye getting enough screen time up in here~ <3)

The redraw has more anatomic issues than the original, which is beautiful and VERY well drawn. Literally no reason to make fun of it.

This is the thing that keeps nagging at me about the hawkeye initiative —

Lady Death begs for a satiric takedown — the costume, the posing, the anatomy.  But too many pictures at the initiative are like this knockoff — feminizing Hawkeye to make HIM look ridiculous, instead of the source material.  And, just to make clear that we get the point that gay=flaming=ridiculous, we get the caption, “he’s fabulous” — which is so obvious even Phineas & Ferb mocked it in one of their first episodes.

Showing how poorly women are handled in comics shouldn’t be a backdoor wide open for cheap homophobic jokes.  How do we close it?

Comic artists do this ALL THE TIME.  Here’s the thing—that’s a double jump sidekick, if I’m getting it right, and… actually, I don’t know how your body looks when you do that, let’s ask google:

….ok google is spectacularly unhelpful when it comes to images, but there is this: Alisa - Stuntwoman Karate - Flying Side Kick

Now the school I went to would say that’s not a side kick because she’s not turned out enough, she’s not using her heel; but that’s ok because there are different styles and apparently some people use the “knife edge” of the foot (which has more chance of hitting things but will spread the impact, thus hurting less, and it’ll also give you more of a chance to break your foot. *cough* anyway.)

Let’s check out some videos:

(Edit: Just pretend I know how to embed and did this right.)

(I’ve never done an embed before, so here’s the links if those doesn’t work.)

See how their bodies are not lining up with their feet?  That’s because you don’t want to land like this:

(Edit: Annnnd again.)

Your body remains upright while your legs and hips twist around so you can punch the person in the face with your heel.  If you don’t do it that way, you’r in for a painful landing, and make yourself even more susceptible to a leg grab, which is actually fairly easy to do when people are kicking you.  So long as you can catch their leg in time, all you have to do is basically shift your weight so they fall over.  It’s a complicated kick that is difficult to execute (properly), especially if you’re doing the run-jump-kick version.  (There’s a reason I couldn’t find very many examples.)

(Also, you’d have to throw yourself way off balance to make it look that way.)

Now, those with martial arts experience/knowledge, feel free to disagree.  It’s been a few years since I’ve attended class.  But I recall at least one instructor saying that although it’s one of the first kicks you learn, it’s difficult to do it right.  That’s because of the angle.  It’s not a comfortable kick—I’d much rather use a front kick or even a back kick.  (That’s more my preference, though.)

tl;dr—It’s an impractical kick that doesn’t even usually look like that and makes landing difficult.  Artists use it ‘cuz it looks cool.

Footnote: I tried doing the kick.  I’m bad at it.  That’s why I didn’t use myself as reference. XP  Better to look at someone doing it right.

Is it sad that what I find the most painful about the original artwork is Harley’s boob?

It’s not her boob. It’s her upper costume/neck attire.

excuse that picture, the anatomy is horrendous. but the point rests still, It’s not her boob. Read up before you comment
